A Quick Update

Some of you may have noticed the lack of Photographs of the Day recently. Well I realised about a week ago that I was spending a large amount of time just looking through photos each day to get a photo of the day, and sometimes rushing my choices due to other commitments, and the blog was becoming over saturated with photos and not enough articles. As such, I have decided to change this feature to a Photograph of the Week set-up.

Hopefully this will aid in making the Photograph of the Week a more interesting feature and make the chosen image a little more special. I still hope to see lots of great photos submitted here, and on Flickr, and I will look to showcase more of these in other ways including articles and interviews.

I should also add that if you’re interested in being interviewed for the site about any aspect of your pinhole photography then get in touch. It could be about a certain project you’re working on, or just your experiences in pinhole photography.

Q:What is the best way to share my pinhole pics from worldwide pinhole day with you? A specific Tumblr tag? Or do you want people to submit them through the "submit" link?

jakebphoto

Good question, you can submit them in anyway you like, although the most useful ways would be via the submission page or the flickr group, making sure that you put about it being a WPPD image somewhere in the description. I look forward to seeing your pinhole photos!

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day

With Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day coming up this Sunday, I hope you are all getting ready for a day of pinhole goodness! This seems like a good time to give you some of the best places on the web to help with your pinhole photography in advance of the day itself.

The first place we have to visit on this little tour is the official Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day website: http://www.pinholeday.org

They have all the information about the day, including how, where, and when to upload your photos, as well as an event finder, allowing you to find any events that are being organised in your area. The resources page is great source of information for anyone looking to expand their pinhole knowledge and skills. You can also view the galleries from the previous 10 years of WPPD.

Next up is the ever popular Believe In Film site: http://believeinfilm.com/

If you have a Twitter or Flickr account, then you’ve probably come across the ‘#believinfilm’ hash-tag. The community that has been pulled together by that one little tag is immense, and it’s still growing. If you have a question about any aspect of film photography, want to know where you can get film stock or equipment, or just want to show of your own awesome film photos, then Believe In Film is the place to be. On the site you can use the ‘rare film finder’ to locate and purchase various types of film, or join in the ongoing discussions by following them on Twitter.

I’d also recommend visiting Old School Photo Lab: http://oldschoolphotolab.com/

They’ve already pledged themselves to all budding pinhole photographers this weekend, so if you need you film processing, I’d recommend checking them out. As they say; “We’re thrilled that people are coming back to film. We never left!”

And if you’re yet to build your pinhole camera, and you’re wondering where to start, here a a couple of kits you might want to check out. The above kit gives you all the pieces to make a ‘snap-together’ 35mm pinhole camera, whilst the one below teaches you the basics and gives you various templates to make yourself. Click the pictures to view them on Amazon.

But don’t forget, if you have access to a darkroom of any sort, the easiest pinhole camera you can make is just a box with a hole in it, loaded with some photographic paper.

I look forward to seeing all your shots this weekend, happy shooting!

Pinhole: Power by SquarePegPinhole on Flickr.Photograph of the DayVia Flickr:
Zero Image 69, f235, Kodak Portra 160
Left: about 2 seconds, cropped from square format
Right: about 8 seconds
Knoxville is about three hours east of Nashville. It was the site of the 1982 Worlds Fair and is home to the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), one of the largest power producers in the world. I’ve done the drive to or from Knoxville probably hundreds of times during my life.
About 40 miles from downtown Knoxville TVA’s Kingston Fossil Power Plant, built in the 50s, sits on the banks of the Clinch River. Its dual chimneys, standing 1001 feet tall, serve as a landmark, an honest answer of “not far now.” Despite the pollution they emit I actually find the smokestacks quite beautiful, an amazing achievement of sorts.
In 2008 the Kingston plant was the site of a major environmental disaster when more than 1 billion gallons of coal fly ash (a by-product of burning coal) broke through a retaining wall and covered 300 acres in sludge. There were protests afterward. People were angry with about the careless accident and the pollution TVA produces every day. During the protests I wondered, “How many of those folks remembered to turn off the lights before they left the house this morning.”
I found this light (the right image above) burning in Knoxville’s Old City. It was noon and the sky was clear.
I’m disgusted by how much power we waste (I’m very much part of that “we”). Turning off lights, switching to more efficient products, turning down the thermostat and wearing a sweater inside during the winter…they’re all simple ways to reduce overall consumption.
Here’s a link to “Killowatt Ours,” a good documentary that explains the problems (including the fact that our power needs are destroying mountains) and solutions:www.kilowattours.org/script.php
